06-14-2012 14:10 BJT

PARAMARIBO, June 13 (Xinhua) -- Surinamese President Desire Bouterse said here on Wednesday that his country would further strengthen its ties with China.

Bouterse, who is also leader of Suriname's National Democratic Party (NDP), made this remark when he met with a delegation led by Zhang Gaoli, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee as well as head of the CPC Tianjin Municipal Committee.

Bouterse said that the friendship between Suriname and China has a long history, as the first Chinese immigrants arrived in Suriname 158 years ago, who had joined the local society quickly and contributed greatly to Suriname's development.

In the new era, Suriname is willing to further strengthen its ties with China as well as other BRICS countries, namely Brazil, Russia, India and South Africa, based on the principles of mutual benefit, equality, and non-interference in each other's internal affairs, Bouterse said.

The Surinamese president also said his country will strengthen exchanges and cooperation with China and support more Chinese enterprises to invest in the country.

Zhang spoke highly of the relations between China and Suriname. He said that, in recent years, both countries have seen frequent exchanges of visit of high-level delegations, increasingly deepened mutual understanding and political trust, steady growth in economic and trade cooperation, and notable achievements in areas like road and housing constructions.

Zhang appreciated Suriname's adherence to the one-China policy, saying China is willing to to work together with Suriname to advance ties between the two countries.

On the relations between the political parties of the two countries, Zhang said the CPC cherishes its friendship with the NDP, and is willing to further deepen exchanges and cooperation with the party on the base of the four principles dealing with inter-party relations.

On Wednesday, Zhang also met with Suriname's National Assembly Speaker Jennifer Simons and attended the welcome gala held by Surinamese Vice President Robert Ameerali.

At the invitation of the NDP of Suriname, a delegation led by Zhang arrived in the country on Tuesday afternoon for a goodwill visit.
