28,000 Syrian refugees in Lebanon: UN

BEIRUT, June 18 (Xinhua) -- Around 28,000 Syrian refugees are currently in Lebanon, most of whom have been receiving protection and aid from Lebanese government, UN Agencies and non-governmental associations, according to UN Refugee Agency's latest weekly report.

The report said the number of Syrian refugees in Lebanon rose this week to reach 28,000, with 20,000 registered refugees receiving aid and support in various parts of the country.

"Recent contacts with Internal Security Forces in Lebanon revealed the presence of newly arrived families from Syria in various regions of the Bekaa region," the report said.

It added that the agency has registered 767 additional refugees in North Lebanon to reach the total of 14,727, and has opened a new registration office in Wadi Khaled region.

The report said 5,299 refugees have been registered in various regions of Bekaa, including 881 refugees that have been registered in the Jdeide office.

Lebanese government's Higher Relief Agency "has been providing for the refugees with basic food and medical care since more than a year ago, while the Lebanese Ministry of Social Affairs has been providing with necessary social and psychic support," the report added.

As for the Bekaa area, the report indicated that the aid is provided by UN agencies and its non-governmental association partners.
