Kenya's only female boxer to feature at Olympics

06-21-2012 09:21 BJT Special Report:2012 London Olympic Games |

NAIROBI, June 20 (Xinhua) -- Kenya's Elizabeth Andiego will make history at London Olympics as the first Kenyan female boxer to feature at the event after she was added to the country's line-up on Tuesday.

Middleweight (75kg) pugilist Andiego will join the London party after International Amateur Boxing Association (AIBA) revised the judge's ruling that saw her lose to Norway's Lien Lotte in their bout in Qinhuangdao, China during the Olympics qualifiers last month.

The East African nation's other boxer in the Olympics roster is flyweight Benson Gicharu, the Commonwealth Games silver medallist.

"This is good news for us and she will now join Gicharu for rigorous training in Cardiff from July 5 ahead of the Games in London," National Olympics Committee of Kenya chief executive, Stephen Soi said on Wednesday after announcing the development.

Kenya sent six female pugilists to China but lost by three points to the Norwegian in the middleweight decider.

"It's good that we will have one more Olympian who is not a runner, but more so for the growth of the sport since we sent few boxers for qualifiers due to wrangles in the federation," the CEO added.

Andiego becomes the 14th confirmed Kenyan competitor for London ahead of the climax of the track and field Olympics trials in Nairobi on Saturday.

Officials intend to send at least 48 competitors to London.
