U.S. government urges southeastern states' residents to prepare for tropical storm

WASHINGTON, June 24 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. federal government on Sunday urged residents in some southeastern states to prepare for Tropical Storm Debby, which started lashing the area with heavy wind and rain.

The U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), through its regional offices in Atlanta, Georgia. and Denton, Texas, has been closely monitoring Debby, which was located in the Gulf of Mexico about 200 miles (320 kms) south-southeast of the mouth of the Mississippi River, the FEMA said in a statement.

Earlier Sunday, Miami-based National Hurricane Center issued a tropical storm warning for the areas along the Gulf Coast, from the Mississippi-Alabama border eastward to the Florida Panhandle's Ochlockonee River.

The FEMA said residents living in the region should closely monitor this storm due to the uncertainty in its strength and track, and follow the direction of local and state officials to prepare their family, home or business to reduce the impact of severe weather.

"As always, we urge all individuals in the region to follow the directions provided by local officials, listen to NOAA Weather Radio and their local news to monitor for updates," said FEMA head Craig Fugate. "History has taught us that storm tracks can change quickly and unexpectedly and people are urged to stay informed and monitor storm conditions."

The FEMA added that it was in close coordination with federal, state and local partners in the states, including Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana and Mississippi as the storm strengthened.
