EU reinforces sanctions against Syria

06-26-2012 00:46 BJT Special Report:Crisis in Syria |

BRUSSELS, June 25 (Xinhua) -- The European Union (EU) on Monday reinforced its sanctions against Syria, in response to the escalating violence in the country.

According to a conclusion adopted by the EU Foreign Affairs Council in Luxembourg, the council froze the assets of six entities and targeted one additional person with a travel ban and an asset freeze.

"They (the sanctions) target those responsible for the violence, not the civilian population," said EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton following the adoption of the conclusion.

In Monday's conclusion, the EU strongly condemns the "brutal violence and massacres of civilians" in Syria, and reiterated its full support to UN-Arab League joint envoy for Syria Kofi Annan's mission and his six-point plan.

It said the EU regretted that the escalation of violence led to the suspension of the United Nations Supervision Mission in Syria (UNSMIS) observation activities on June 16.

According to the conclusion, the EU urged the Syrian National Council and other opposition groups to put aside their differences and to agree on a set of shared principles and start working towards an inclusive, orderly and peaceful transition in Syria.

It was the 16th round of the EU sanctions against Syria since May 2011, which brings the total number of persons subject to sanctions to 129 while 49 entities are now affected by an EU asset freeze.
