British police arrest seven after assault weapons found in car

07-06-2012 23:05 BJT

LONDON, July 6 (Xinhua) -- Britain's West Midlands Police on Friday said they have arrested seven men on terror offences after firearms and other weapons were found in their car.

Six men from the West Midlands and one man from West Yorkshire were detained on suspicion of the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism during a series of arrests this week, police said.

The arrests followed a routine stop of a vehicle by police on the M1 motorway in South Yorkshire last Saturday. The car was impounded on suspicion of having no insurance, while the passengers were let go without charges.

During later searching of the car, "firearms, offensive weapons and other material were found hidden inside," prompting police to trace and arrest the driver, passengers and others suspected of being involved.

Police said the items from the car were currently undergoing forensic analysis and that they were searching homes of those arrested.

Six of them are aged between 22 to 27, while the seventh man is 43.
