U.S. shooter in Trayvon Martin case released after posting bail

WASHINGTON, July 6 (Xinhua) -- George Zimmerman, the shooter in the U.S. state of Florida charged with killing black teenager Trayvon Martin in a high-profile case, was released Friday after a judge set bail at 1 million U.S. dollars.

He was released Friday afternoon from the Seminole County jail after posting 100,000 dollars as required by law, after Judge Kenneth Lester ruled that Zimmerman's deceit over cash holdings at his first bond hearing in April was not enough to hold him without bail, local media reported.

Zimmerman, a Sanford neighborhood watch volunteer charged with second-degree murder for killing 17-year-old Martin, walked out of the jail, wearing a gray suit and white shirt. "We are confident and comfortable that George will be safe," his attorney Don West told the CNN outside the jail.

An initial bond of 150,000 dollars was revoked last month after the judge learned that Zimmerman and his wife had failed to disclose more than 150,000 in donations from the public.

Zimmerman, 28, fatally shot Martin on Feb. 26, claiming that he did so in self-defense against the attack by the victim. The case has gained nationwide attention as many, including the Martin family, believe that race was a factor behind the shooting as Zimmerman is a (white) Hispanic American.
