Lebanese army on high alert on border with Syria

BEIRUT, July 7 (Xinhua) -- After three women were killed and nine others injured Saturday by shelling from Syria on Lebanon's northern border area of Wadi Khaled, the Lebanese army said its units are on alert in the area.

"Army units in the area are on high alert and the required field measures were taken to address any violation of the Syrian- Lebanese borders," the Lebanese army said in a statement.

Local National News Agency reported earlier that RPG shells launched from the Syrian side hit Wadi Khaled, killing three people and wounding nine others, including children.

Some houses of local residents were also struck.

Many residents have fled the areas which "were targeted by the Syrian shelling," the NNA said.

Since the outbreak of the Syrian rebellion against the government of President Bashar al-Assad in March 2011, the Lebanese-Syrian border has witnessed a number of shootings and clashes.
