BEIJING, July 9 (Xinhua) -- For Chinese cyclist Guo Shuang, the pursuit of an Olympic gold medal will be even harder than four years ago.

Tipped as a gold hopeful in the 2008 Olympic Games, Guo failed to make the breakthrough, only snatching a bronze in the women's sprint. This time in London, she still bears Chinese cycling's gold dream.

"Chinese cyclists have already booked 12 berths for the London Olympic Games and Guo Shuang is still the best prospect among the team," said Song Xiang, deputy secretary general of the Chinese Cycling Association.

According to Song, the world cycling governing body UCI rearranged London Olympics track cycling events in 2009, adding women's team sprint, kirlin and omnium to the program.

"It is really hard for Guo to win a gold medal in London, based on the results during the past several years, especially her result at this year's Melbourne world championships," added Song.

China sent 15 cyclists to the UCI Melbourne world championships, and competed for all the women's events, but only won one bronze medal in the women's team sprint.

In the women's sprint, Guo was beaten by Australia's Anna Meares in the semifinal to place fourth. Briton's Beijing Olympic gold medalist Victoria Pendleton won the gold.

"Several cyclists including Pendleton and Meares are stronger than Guo. During the past four years, seldom did Guo win the race when competing with them," said Song.

Twelve years ago in Sydney, Jiang Cuihua won China a bronze medal in women's 500 meters time trial. Eight years ago in Athens, Jiang Yonghua added a silver.

"Chinese cyclists are traditionally good at the women's short track events, We hope we can make a breakthrough on the track in London," said Song.

At the 2012 London Olympic Games, Chinese cyclists will fight for medals in five track events, namely, sprint, team sprint, keirin, team pursuit and omnium.
