6 NATO soldiers killed in eastern Afghanistan blast

07-09-2012 13:17 BJT

KABUL, July 9 (Xinhua) -- Up to six NATO soldiers were killed in a blast in restive eastern Afghanistan on Sunday, the military alliance confirmed on Monday.

"Six International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) servicemembers died following an improvised explosive device (IED) attack," in eastern Afghanistan, the NATO-led ISAF said in a statement.

The brief statement gave neither the nationalities of the victims nor the details about the incidents under the ISAF policy.

Troops mostly from United States have been stationed in eastern Afghanistan within the framework of ISAF to curb Taliban-linked insurgency there.

The Taliban insurgents, who have been waging more than a decade- long insurgency, launched an annual spring offensive starting from May 3 to target Afghan forces as well as U.S. and NATO troops across the country.

Afghan Taliban has launched massive IED attacks against ISAF and Afghan national security force in recent years.

Currently over 130,000 NATO-led ISAF troops with majority of them Americans have been serving in Afghanistan.

A total of 228 foreign soldiers have been killed so far in Afghanistan in 2012.
