China calls on parties concerned to continue to support Annan's mediation efforts in Syria

BEIJING, July 9 (Xinhua) -- China on Monday called on concerned parties to continue to support UN-Arab League Joint Special Envoy Kofi Annan's mediation efforts in Syria.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Liu Weimin made the remark at a daily news briefing when asked to comment on the prospects for Annan's six-point peace plan.

Liu said solving the conflict through political means is still the current consensus of the parties involved.

Solving the conflict in this way was also agreed upon during the foreign ministers' meeting of the Action Group on Syria held last month in Geneva, said Liu.

Joint Special Envoy Annan himself is in Syria at present to mediate, Liu added.

"China believes that the pressing task now is to continue to support and coordinate Annan's mediation efforts, urge the Syrian government and opposition forces to implement Annan's six-point plan and UN Security Council resolutions and implement the spirit of the communique and relevant proposals of the foreign ministers' meeting of the Action Group on Syria," Liu said.

Annan, who arrived in Damascus on Sunday to meet with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, proposed in March a six-point peace plan calling for an immediate withdrawal of heavy weaponry from residential areas, a halt to all forms of armed violence, and a daily ceasefire to allow the unobstructed passage of humanitarian relief, among others.

The plan was backed by the UN Security Council and accepted by the Syrian government. However, the Syrian government and armed opposition forces continue to engage in violence.
