American boxer Sonnen rules out appeal over UFC loss to Silva

07-11-2012 17:11 BJT

RIO DE JANEIRO, July 11 (Xinhua) -- American boxer Chael Sonnen says he will not request the annulment of Anderson Silva's UFC middleweight victory, despite reports the Brazilian used an illegal move against the American.

Silva defended his championship belt with a second-round technical knockout of Sonnen in Las Vegas on Saturday. Having been dominated in the first round, Silva rallied in the second after striking his opponent with a knee to the chest - a move some interpreted as against UFC rules.

"It all comes down to what the referee says," Sonnen said in an interview with MMA Fighting. "Where he says the knee landed is where the knee landed.

"Part of competing is you've got to know how to lose. Sometimes you have to man-up, swallow it and walk out."

Sonnen is yet to confirm if he will continue fighting, saying he did not want to let emotion affect his decision.

The 35-year-old showed his more humble side after engaging in a trash-talking war of words with Silva in the lead up to the fight.

"It's very rare in a competition where a guy will fall apart and come back within the same night," Sonnen said.

"At some point he (Silva) said: 'You know what, I think I can win this thing.' I really admire that in him. I look up to that in an athlete."
