6.3-magnitude jolts Indian-controlled Kashmir

SRINAGAR, Indian-controlled Kashmir, July 12 (Xinhua) -- A strong earthquake Thursday shook Indian-controlled Kashmir and its adjoining areas, officials said.

According to Disaster Management officials in Srinagar, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir, an earthquake measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale occurred Thursday at 7.42 p.m. local time.

"The epicenter of the earthquake was in Hindukush in Afghanistan, located at 36.5 degrees North Latitude and 70.9 degrees East Longitude," said Amir Ali, coordinator Disaster Management office in Srinagar.

The earthquake was felt throughout Kashmir. Panic stricken residents were seen rushing out of houses and buildings in Srinagar.

"The tremors panicked us and everyone came out rushing from the hotel building," said Aarti Bhatia, a visiting tourist.

However, no reports of damage to property or loss of life were received so far.

Geologists say Indian-controlled Kashmir is located in a zone of high seismic activity.

Srinagar falls in Seismic Zone-V and other parts of Indian- controlled Kashmir in Seismic Zone IV.

A high intensity quake measuring 7.4 on the Richter scale with its epicenter in Muzaffarabad in Pakistan-controlled Kashmir shook the region on October 8, 2005 causing large scale destruction killing 80,000 people.
