07-19-2012 08:59 BJT

The Enterprise, a 150,000-pound mammoth of a flying machine, goes on public display at the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum's new Space Shuttle Pavilion.

Encased in the center of an accommodating inflatable dome, the shuttle will be available for visitors to admire up close from just feet away.

At 57 feet wide and 137 feet long — with a 78-foot-high wingspan to boot — the Enterprise is an imposing figure with quite a presence in its new home.

The space shuttle, which was completed in 1976, was NASA's first. The Enterprise was never used in an actual space mission but was a full-scale test vehicle in the air and on the ground. It performed critical tests around the Earth's atmosphere and is widely credited with paving the way for five future shuttles.

"This is a new beginning for Enterprise," said the Intrepid Co- Chairman Charles de Gunzburg. "As our nation's very first space shuttle, Enterprise now opens a new chapter in her long history of service here in New York."
