Brazil's President travels to London to promote sports, science

RIO DE JANEIRO, July 24 (Xinhua) -- Brazil's President Dilma Rousseff on Tuesday started a four-day-long trip to London, where she will promote sports and science.

Brazil is sending 259 athletes to the Games, who will compete in 32 sports.

In London, Rousseff will meet with Queen Elizabeth II and attend the Opening Ceremony of the London Olympic Games, which will take place on Friday. And on Wednesday, she will meet British Prime Minister David Cameron to discuss the global economic crisis.

The President will be accompanied by the Ministers of Sports, Foreign Relations, Tourism, Education, Social Communications, and Science and Technology, and by House of Representatives President Marco Maia.

Rousseff and her entourage will promote Brazil as a tourism destination, the country will host the next Olympic Games, in 2016. She is expected to attend the inauguration of the Brazil House, a large area set up by the Brazilian government in London, in which people will have the chance to know more about Brazil's natural beauties, cuisine, culture, and music.

The President will also meet with world-renowned scientist Stephen Hawking and visit a science museum in London. Rousseff has been campaigning for her administration's Science without Borders scholarship program, which aims at sending 100,000 Brazilian undergrads and grad students to foreign countries to study in the next four years.

Several UK universities will be included in the program. President Rousseff has campaigned for spots in universities in several other countries, such as the U.S., Canada, and Germany.
