RIO DE JANEIRO, July 24 (Xinhua) -- Brazilian soccer giants Flamengo had confirmed their interest in signing Dorival Junior as their new coach, local media reported Tuesday.

Less than a day after sacking Joel Santana, Flamengo's director Zinho said that his priority was to sign Dorival, who had been dismissed by Porto Alegre side Internacional last week.

"I'm interested in Dorival but we haven't met with him to talk about the position yet," Zinho said.

"He is an excellent coach and I want to be able to speak with him as soon as possible."

Santana was sacked following Flamengo's 1-0 loss to Cruzeiro on Sunday which left the Rio outfit 10th in Brazil's Serie A standings with 15 points from 11 games.

Flamengo's next match is at home to Portuguesa on Thursday night.
