U.S. soldier dies in W. Afghanistan

07-25-2012 15:50 BJT

KABUL, July 25 (Xinhua) -- A U.S. soldier died in western Afghanistan, the U.S. forces confirmed in a statement on Wednesday.

"A U.S. Forces-Afghanistan service member died as a result of a combat related injury in western Afghanistan yesterday," the statement said.

The coalition did not provide details or the name of the victim, only saying "it is USFOR-A policy to defer casualty identification procedures to the relevant national authorities."

The Taliban-led insurgency has been rampant since the militant group launched an annual spring offensive dubbed "Al-Farooq" on May 3 against Afghan and NATO-led troops stationed in the country.

A total of 257 foreign soldiers, most of them Americans, have been killed in Afghanistan so far in 2012.
