South Korea women's team win 7th straight Olympic archery gold

LONDON, July 29 (Xinhua) -- The South Korean women's team edged China 210-219 to take home their seventh straight Olympic gold at Lord's Cricket Ground on Sunday.

The South Korean women's team edged China 210-219 to take home their
seventh straight Olympic gold at Lord's Cricket Ground on Sunday.

The final was a new version of an old story. At Beijing Olympics four years ago, China and South Korea entered the finals in the last two Olympics, and South Korea had won both. The result was no different this time.

South Korea, known as the "dream team" in the archery sport, lost the gold on men's team event after losing to the United States in the semifinal.

Ki Bo Bae, Lee Sung Jin, Choi Hyeonju and coach Jang Young Sool was released after the breathtaking final.

"It's important for the women's team to win the medal, because the men's team failed to achieve title yesterday," said Jang.

"It was the greatest moment of my life. I have had a hard time during the training, because my scores have not been good I cried a lot," said Ki.

The South Koreans have ruled this event since it was introduced at the Seoul 1988 Olympic Games, and the team extended the record on Sunday.

China ended South Korea's unbeaten run in the women's individual event at Beijing 2008 and have been closing the gap ever since. After beating Italy 200-199, the United States 218-213, and Russia 208-207, China earned the opportunity to change their fate, and they almost did it.

South Korea had the two top scorers in the ranking round in Ki and Lee, but they were pushed all the way by China. In the final end, China shot first and scored three nines. Choi scored eight in reply, leaving Ki to shoot at least a nine to win. KI did so.

"It was disappointing for me to get just a 9, as the final shooter," said Fang Yuting. "We are good enough to compete with the South Korean team, and we will try that again in the future."

In the bronze medal match, Japan came back from a four-point deficit at the halfway stage to beat Russia 209-207 in a match where the competitors had to cope with a low-flying pigeon across the field of play. It was Japan's first women's Olympic archery medal.
