Marianne Vos of the Netherlands won the gold medal in the women's cycling road race at the London
Olympics here on Sunday.

Vos, 25, won every major cycling title across several disciplines, including world championships in road cycling, cyclo-cross and track as well as a gold medal in the points race in track cycling at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.

Britian's Armitstead Elizabeth took the silver and Olga Zabelinskaya from Russia had the bronze.

The heavy rain proved to be a big challenge to most of riders as many of them have to change tyres during the race.

"There's a storm coming up, rain and wind. Real Dutch weather conditions, that's good for us." Vos said.

The mass start road cycling race started at The Mall in central London before the riders head south-west through the city. They then cross the River Thames at Putney Bridge and continue out through Richmond Park, Bushy Park and past Hampton Court Palace.

The Surrey section of the course incorporates several circuits of a challenging loop around Box Hill, before the riders head north through Leatherhead, Esher, Kingston-upon-Thames, Richmond Park and back to The Mall for a dramatic finish.

The women's Olympic road race's route is 140 kilometers in length, and 66 cyclists competed in the race.
