Three wins from three for Chinese divers after Chen and Wang win from platform

08-01-2012 01:11 BJT Special Report:2012 London Olympic Games |

LONDON, July 31 (Xinhua) -- Was there ever really any doubt? The Chinese duo of Chen Ruolin and Wang Hao won China's third diving gold medal in the three dive events that have so far been held in the London Olympics.

Chen and Wang led from second dive and finished the event over 25 points ahead of their nearest rivals.

With three wins out of three events, the Chinese continue on track to win all eight of the diving events and improve on their performance in Beijing where they won seven.

The recipe for success was the same as it had been for men's pair, Cao Yuan and Zhang Yanquan in the 10-meter platform on Monday and Wu Minxia and He Zi in the women's three-meter springboard on Sunday, perform the dives and don't make any mistakes.

"I wasn't nervous, the finals are a test of what we have trained for," said Chen, who said that both she and Wang had an excellent understanding on the platform.

"Both of us can perform very well and we have experience together and that allows us to be synchronized in our movements," she continued.

However, the 19-year-old added that she was considering a change of discipline and switching to springboard in the future, as well as explaining that Wu Minxia had spoken to her in order to encourage her on the way to gold.

Chen and Wang did just that to end the competition with a total score of 368.40 points, well clear of Mexican duo of Paola Espinosa and Alejandra Orozco, who finished with 343.32.

The Mexican's followed on from the silver medal won by Ivan Garcia and Gabriel Sanchez from the platform on Monday to give Espinosa, the 2009 world champion from the 10-meter platform, the perfect gift for her 26th birthday.

"I am very happy, after all of the work we did, we were able to relax in the competition and produce a good series of dives,"said Paula, who was proud of her achievements.

"I am happy I have been able to write my own story and of having made a mark in my country. I am starting to think that is worth all of the effort, because there are many who never get this reward,"she added.

Canadian duo of Meghan Benafeito and Roseline Filion won the bronze medal with a score of 337.62 points and Benafeito put the triumph down their close relationship in and out of the water.

"Since we started diving together, we have become best friends, we do everything together, go shopping and everything. It helps us to know what the other is thinking" she explained, adding that Roseline never looked at the scoreboard during the competition.

"She never knows where we are or how many points we have, but we know if we dive well then we will end up near the top," she said.

Meanwhile the British pair Sarah Barrow and Tonia Crouch finished a creditable fifth.

"It's the best we have dived in an international competition, so we can't be too sad about it, but we worked hard to try and win a medal, although we didn't dive quite well enough to win one,"said Tonia.
