Schmitt wins women's 200m freestyle

08-01-2012 03:41 BJT Special Report:2012 London Olympic Games |

LONDON, July 31 (Xinhua) -- American Allison Schmitt powered her way to a gold medal and a new Olympic record in the women's 200 freestyle on Monday night.

The 22-year-old silver medalist in the 400 meters freestyle was the most powerful swimmer in the race, leading from virtually the start and finishing ahead of Australian, Bronte Barratt and Camille Moffat, who had beaten her in the 400 meters.

Barratt had been the fastest in qualifying, but was always trailing, though she kept her nerve to assure the silver medal and improve on the seventh place she registered in Beijing.

For a short while it had looked as if an American 1-2 was on the cards as Missy Franklin swam a great first 100 meters to go clear of the rest of the field. However, the 17-year-old tired in the third lap allowing Barratt and Moffat to overtake her and she had to settle for fourth.
