Kazakhstan weightlifter wins gold in women's 75kg

08-04-2012 02:24 BJT Special Report:2012 London Olympic Games |

LONDON, Aug. 3 (Xinhua) -- Kazakhstan weightlifter Svetlana Podobedova won the gold medal in women's 75kg category with a total of 291kg on Friday.

Russian lifter Natalya Zabolotnaya finished with the same total weight and a new Olympic record but had to settle for silver because of heavier bodyweight.

Olympic records seemed as fragile as glass in the event, which saw both the gold and the silver medalists set and break records one after another.

During the snatch session, Podobedova lifted 130kg in her third attempt and broke the previous snatch Olympic record of 128kg, before Zabolotnaya raised the mark to 131kg one minute later. In clean-and-jerk, both the Kazakhstan and the Russian succeeded in all three attempts. Zabolotnaya set Olympic record by jerking 155kg and 160kg in the last two attempts, but Podobedova withstood the pressure and managed 156kg and 161kg to clinch the gold, which is the third gold medal by Kazakhstan weightlifters at London Olympics.

Podobedova, a former Russian athlete said, "In a way gold is gold. But this gold is for Kazhakstan. I am grateful I could compete. In 2008 Russia didn't allow me to go to Beijing but Kazhakstan gave me a chance. I started training for this slowly, and this gold is for Kazhakstan."

Belarus lifter Iryna Kulesha won the bronze medal with 269kg, her first podium finish after placing fourth at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games and 2011 world championships.
