All dreams come true for Sun Yang

08-05-2012 07:40 BJT Special Report:2012 London Olympic Games |

LONDON, Aug. 4 (Xinhua) -- After winning the 1,500m freestyle in a new world record time, Chinese swimmer Sun Yang said he had fulfilled all his goals in the London Olympic Games.

The 20-year-old, who became China's first ever male Olympic swimming champion after winning the 400m freestyle, clocked 14:31.02 over 1,500 meters, chopping three seconds off his own world mark and beating silver medalist by eight seconds.

"You don't understand how much I wanted this gold medal," said Sun. "I really, really wanted it, and now I made it."

Sun has collected two golds, one silver, one bronze plus a world record in London.

"I'm so proud that all my objectives have been achieved," he said.

"I did not expect the little accident to happen at the start of the race," Sun admitted, referring to his fall off the block before the buzzer.

After giving the "ready" order for the finalists, the referee gave a "keep silent" request to the roaring crowd instead of buzzer immediately.

Sun did not hear the beep and jumped in. The spectators including press were stunned, having no idea whether Sun was disqualified for a false start.

"I was really worried at that moment. I looked at my parents first (who were on the tribune). My mind went totally blank and I didn't know what happened," he said.

"It's really not easy to recover from the accident to achieve that result," said Sun, whose eyes brimmed with tears.
