Jin for second gold at London Olympics

08-06-2012 00:29 BJT Special Report:2012 London Olympic Games |

LONDON, Aug. 5 (Xinhua) -- South Korean shooting legend Jin Jongoh continued his magic performance at London Olympics, covering seven-point deficit to win gold from men's 50m pistol here on Sunday.

It was the second gold medal for 33-year-old veteran at the London Games, and the fifth Olympic medal in his career.

"I knew that if I win it would be the second gold in two Olympics but I did not imagine that I would do this. My qualification was not good and I nearly gave up on this idea. I was trying not to be too ambitious," said Jin.

Jin wasn't on his top form in the qualification stage, scoring 562 points to be ranked fifth. Jin's teammate Choi Young Rae totalled 569 points to top the qualification ranking, seven more than Jin and three more than the second placed Wang Zhiwei of China.

However, Jin turned to a totally different person in the final. He kept all his first nine shots above 9.4 to earn a chance to fight for the gold in the final shot.

Jin did accomplished the seemingly impossible task, scoring 10.2, totalling 662.0 points to bag the gold. The 661.5-point Choi, who missed gold because of the 8.1-point tenth shot in the final, burst into tears after the match.

"It was my worst shot but I tried my best. And when I finished, I just felt relieved," said Choi.

"I am happy to get silver but I am heartbroken not to get gold."

Jin was happy for his gold, but sorry for his teammate. "I said sorry to Choi right after I finished the competition," said Jin.

"I will have dinner with the team and especially with Choi tonight."

Chinese young shooter Wang Zhiwei took home the bronze with 658.6 points.
