Unites States team breaks reocrds to top women's basketball Group A

08-06-2012 02:29 BJT Special Report:2012 London Olympic Games |

LONDON, Aug. 5 (Xinhua) -- The Unites States women's basketball team defeated China 114-66 to stay unbeaten in Group A at London Olympics and will face Canada in Tuesday's quarterfinals. The victory also saw the US team broke several own records at olympic Games.

The US team only used one quarter to seize the victory. Leading only three points into the second quarter, the Americans strengthened their defense and outscored China 30-8 in the quarter to build a 28-point lead by halftime. The US team got 16 points from fast breaks in the first half while it was only two for China.

The Chinese team played their best quarter of the tournament in the first one in which they only trailed by three points. Chen Nan scored eight of her 16 points in this quarter. Song Xiaoyun took eight and Gao Song had seven.

The score of 114 points tied the record of scoring in a single match that the US team created in 1992, in which they beat Spain 114-59 in a group match.

The 52 field goals broke the formal one of 47, which was created in 1996 Games, in the match against Japan.

Americans made 33 assists to improve the record by three, which was created in the match against Brazil in 1996.

Angel McCoughtry made eight of her eight shots, breaking Lisa Leislie's 7-of-7 at 2008 Beijing Games.

"We knew it would be a tough match and we fought for our honour." said Chen. "We got little pressure before the match and performed our best in the first quarter. They strengthened their defense in the second quarter and forced us many turnovers."

Chen led China with 16 while Song Xiaoyun had 15 and Ma Zengyu took 13. All American players scored and six of them reached double figures. Diana Taurasi took a match-high 22. Candace Parker finished with 10 points, six rebounds and four assists.

"We knew China's three-pointer shooters and their quickness are problems to every team." said Geno Auriemma, head coach of the US team. "But we came out with focus. Candace Parker came into the match at the end of the first quarter and the second quarter. She completely changed the match."

China, who has never beat the US team in an Olympic match, also booked a berth in the quarterfinals, after finishing 3-2 in the group. China will play against Australia in the quarterfinal.

Australia won three silver medals in a row at 2000, 2004 and 2008 Games, only losing to United States in finals.

"We watched Australia's matches and I thought they were not in their best form." said Chen. "We won't give up and we will fight with everything we have."
