Argentinean tennis star wins country's first 2012 Olympic medal

08-06-2012 05:01 BJT Special Report:2012 London Olympic Games |

LONDON, Aug. 5 (Xinhua) -- Argentinean tennis player Juan Martin del Potro Sunday won a bronze Olympic medal, garnering the first medal so far for Argentina in the 2012 games.

"The (Argentinean) flag is going to be over the podium for the first time at the games, and that's what makes me most happy," said the nineth-seeded Del Potro after beating Serbia's second-seeded Novan Djokovic 7-5 and 6-4 in a just under two-hour match at legendary Wimbledon. On Friday, the Argentinean lost to the Swiss Roger Federer (ranked No. 1) 3-6, 7-6 (5) and 19-17, in a tough three-set match that lasted four hours and 26 minutes.

"Recovering from one of my biggest letdowns in tennis in such a short time was spectacular," said Del Potro of going from his loss against Federer to make it into the top three.

"I was two points from winning and fighting for the gold and securing a medal, but suddenly I could end up with nothing," the winner of the 2009 U.S. Open told ESPN.

Del Potro, 23, celebrated the fact that "Argentina is going to have a medal from the games," recalling that before the games began he had said "it would be historic to steal a medal" from one of the favorites.

"After three years, I made history again," said the player, referring to his win at the U.S. Open.

Del Potro called on Argentineans to enjoy this latest achievement, saying "winning isn't easy."

With Del Potro's bronze, Argentina's overall Olympic medal count totals 67, including 17 gold, 23 silver and 27 bronze.
