LONDON, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) -- Yang Hak Seon, the reigning world champion, won South Korea the men's vault title and also the first Olympic gymnastics gold out of two routines averaging 16.533 points at the London Games on Monday.

Denis Ablyazin of Russia took the silver with 16.399 points after winning the bronze from floor exercise. Ukraine's Igor Radivilov, silver medalist at 2012 European Championship, was third in 16.316 points.

Radivilov was the winner of five World Cup vault event from 2011 to 2012.

Yang, who qualified second to the vault final, executed his first vault, the triple-twisting front somersault referred to as "the Yang", with faulted landing. He stepped forward for twice, which also earned him 16.466 points. His second was carried off soundly and secured the gold medal.

It's a memorable and exciting day for Yang. "I can't actually feel what's happening to me at the moment," said 20-year-old Yang.

"We haven't had a gold medal in Olympic gymnastics before and the training didn't go very well so I was nervous. But I'm happy that I got over that and won the gold medal.

"(South) Korea's aim is to be in the top ten total medal chart and I'm happy to contribute to that.

"In the first vault I got a very good score and for the second I had a really good landing so I was pretty confident," added he.

Ablyazin was prepared for silver though he expects gold. "I knew the (South) Korean gymnast (Yang) would win the gold, but I still hoped for gold," said the 20-year-old Russian.

"However, I didn't get upset when I saw the score from (South) Korea, I was prepared for silver. I'm satisfied with my performance at these Olympics. I hope for gold at the next Olympics."
