Asia revives in women's volleyball at London Olympics

LONDON, Aug. 7 (Xinhua) -- The semifinals of women's volleyball event at London Olympics will witness Japan-Brazil and South Korea-U.S. clashes.

Japan eventually made it to the top four 24 years after the 1988 Seoul Olympics by beating the Asian arch-rivals China 3-2. Saori Kimura and Yukiko Ebata were joint top scorers with 33 points each.

South Korea harvest a stellar 3-1 win over Italy, a result that brings them back to the semifinals for the first time since the 1976 Olympics in Montreal. The tournament's leading scorer, Kim Yeon-Koung, who scored 28 points.

The Japanese will play the U.S., who beat Dominican Republic in straight sets with Destinee Hooker was top scorer with 19 points.

Meanwhile, Brazil got back on track in quarterfinals with Russia that had turned into a real uphill climb, with the defending champion going down twice in the set count.

The semifinals will be played on Thursday.
