Brazilian spiker Fabiana calls for highest fighting spirit

08-10-2012 16:45 BJT Special Report:2012 London Olympic Games |

RIO DE JANEIRO, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) -- Brazilian spiker Fabiana has called for highest fighting spirit, besides tactics and form, in the Olympic women's volleyball gold medal match against current world No. 1 the United States on Saturday.

"What will count most is heart. Whoever goes into the match with the most-willing-to-win heart will win the gold medal," Fabiana told Globoesporte on Thursday.

The U.S. team is undefeated in the tournament and enters the final as firm favorite to win the country's first ever Olympic women's volleyball title.

Brazil has not beaten the U.S. since the Olympic final in Beijing four years ago when it took gold with a 3-1 victory.

The result has been followed by three consecutive losses in the teams' head-to-head duels, including a 3-1 defeat in the London Games preliminary round.

"They are not unbeatable," Fabiana said. "We went through a difficult period and lost to them earlier in the competition. But we have improved since then and have belief in ourselves."

Brazil progressed to the final with a 3-0 semifinal victory over Japan while the US also recorded a straight-set victory over South Korea on Thursday.
