Spain wins women's Elliot 6m

WEYMOUTH/PORTLAND, August 11 (Xinhua) -- Spain's Tamara Echegoyen Dominguez/Sofia Toro Prieto Puga/Angela Pumariega Menendez won women's Elliott 6m match racing final at the London Olympic sailing regatta here on Saturday.

The Spanish trio beat Australia's Olivia Price/Nina Curtis/Lucinda Whitty 3-2 to win the first-to-three-points match. In the third race, Price lost control and was flung from her boat in 25-knot winds and big waves.

Price swam back to the boat and the Australians resumed the race, but were already unable to catch Spain.

In the last race, the Australians obstructed the Spanish boat and had a penalty turn. Thus they lost the lead and had to settle for a silver medal.

"We are very happy, it's a dream. We never imagined we would win the gold medal. We were not the favourites. When we crossed the line we didn't believe it," Menendez said.

Silver medalist Price expressed her regret over the loss. "The conditions were quite wild and I just guess I wasn't holding on quite enough and I got swept out of the back by a wave. I've never fallen out of the boat before and it was a little bit of a shock to the system."

"Mixed emotions. We had a chance of winning," she added. "But the silver medal still means a lot. It's been wonderful. I've enjoyed every minute of being here. We're really happy with silver. We didn't give up. Everything has just been amazing."

Earlier, the Finnish crew of Silja Lehtinen/Silija Kanerva/Mikaela Wulff defeated Russia's Ekaterina Skudina/Elena Siuzeva/Elena Oblova in the race for the bronze medal.
