08-15-2012 06:22 BJT

KATSINA, Nigeria, Aug. 14 (Xinhua) -- Authorities of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) announced on Tuesday that it had deported 100 foreigners from northern Katsina State for lack of necessary traveling documents.

State comptroller of NIS Umar Bulama told reporters in Katsina, the state capital, that most of the deportees were citizens of Niger Republic and other neighboring countries in Africa.

"The raid started last weekend and it would be a routine exercise," said the immigration chief, adding that the NIS would continue to check the influx of illegal migrants in the country.

Bulama said the Nigeria Immigration Service had recently arrested a number of persons for alleged human trafficking in Katsina State and had handed the suspects over to the agency in charge of such crimes for further investigation and prosecution.
