Tropical depression Ernesto may evolve into hurricane Florence: Mexican expert

08-15-2012 11:15 BJT

MEXICO CITY, Aug. 14 (Xinhua) -- Tropical depression Ernesto may gain strength as it heads towards northwest Mexico, where it could transform into hurricane Florence, a Mexican expert said on Tuesday.

Orlando Delgado, from Center for Atmospheric Sciences at Mexico's National Autonomous University (UNAM), said in a statement that after passing through southeast Mexico on its apparent way to the Pacific Ocean, Ernesto could instead veer towards the Baja California Peninsula on Mexico's west coast.

The Pacific's low pressure system could provide Ernesto with the conditions to strengthen again, and if it does, it would evolve into hurricane Florence, the next name on the 2012 list of seasonal weather phenomena.

"Moving westward, far from the coasts, if (it) encountered medium and high atmospheric levels, it would veer off and arrive this Thursday on the peninsula," said Delgado.

Delgado also said rain and humidity would continue to affect southeast Mexico.

On the Pacific coast, Florence would affect the Mexican states of Sonora and Sinaloa, especially coastal towns Topolobambo and Mocorito, among others.

According to official reports, at least 12 people have been killed in Mexico by rains, floods and stormy seas caused by Ernesto.
