Turkey's jobless rate falls to 8.2% in May, hits 11-year low

ANKARA, Aug. 15 (Xinhua) -- Turkey's unemployment rate dropped to 8.2 percent in May, hitting the lowest level in more than a decade, data from Turkish Statistics Institute (TurkStat) showed Wednesday.

The official data showed the unemployment rate in Turkey fell 1. 2 points to 8.2 percent in May when compared with the same month last year.

The number of jobless people decreased by 278,000 from 2.55 million in May 2011 to 2.27 million in May 2012, said TurkStat, adding that the urban unemployment rate dropped 1.5 points to 10.1 percent, while the rate in rural areas dropped 0.9 point to 4.5 percent in the period.
