DAMASCUS, Aug. 15 (Xinhua) -- A shootout erupted Wednesday at the al-Razi orchards, a sprawling district in Syria's capital Damascus close to the cabinet building, witnesses said.

The sporadic shootout lasted for a couple of hours, witnesses told Xinhua, adding that security personnel fanned out in the area as an armored vehicle was seen at one of the area's entrances.

Meanwhile, pro-government Addounai TV said the Syrian authorities have hunted down "armed terrorist groups" at al-Razi area on Wednesday afternoon, adding that a number of terrorists were killed while others were rounded up.

Al-Razi orchards area has seen ferocious clashes between armed rebels and government troops over the past couple of months. The rebel fighters have unleashed a number of attacks over the past time at areas in and around the capital as part of the war of attrition they have been undertaking against government forces.

Wednesday's clashes came hours after a diesel truck affixed by an explosive device went off in a military garage near the Dama- Rose hotel, where the UN observers are residing.
