HERAT, Afghanistan, Aug. 15 (Xinhua) -- Up to 18 Afghan civilians were injured in a bomb explosion in Herat, the capital city of western province of Herat Wednesday afternoon, a police source said.

"A bomb attached to a bicycle was detonated at around 3:30 p.m. local time Wednesday in Guzari Lelamiha area of the city, injuring 18 people," a police source who declined to be named told Xinhua.

Meantime, a provincial health spokesman, Mohammad Rafiq Shirzai, told Xinhua that 17 civilians and a policeman were injured in the blast in the city, some 640 km west of capital city of Kabul.

He said four women and two children were among the injured.

"The injured were shifted to a provincial hospital where six of the wounded remain in critical conditions," Shirzai added.

The area is one of the most crowded parts of the city and people were shopping for the upcoming "Eid-ul-Fatar" festival which comes at the end of Muslim fasting month of Ramadan every year, the police source added.

Violence has been on the rise since Taliban launched an annual spring offensive on May 3.

Up to 28 people were killed and over 100 injured when a group of suicide bombers targeted Zaranj city, the capital of southwestern Nimroz province on Tuesday afternoon.

A total of 1,145 Afghan civilians were killed and 1,954 injured in conflict -- related violent incidents and attacks in the first six months of 2012, a 15 percent decrease in overall civilian casualties compared with the same period in 2011, according to a UN report released in Kabul on Aug. 8.
