Multiple attacks kill eight, wound dozens in eastern Iraq

08-16-2012 02:30 BJT

BAGHDAD, Aug. 15 (Xinhua) -- A slew of attacks left eight people killed and dozens wounded in Iraq's eastern province of Diyala on Wednesday, police sources said.

Most of the attacks happened near the capital city of Diyala, Baquba, some 60 km away from the capital Baghdad.

The deadliest attack was a double car bombing in a popular market in Muqdadiyah area, 40 km northeast of Baquba, a local police source said. The two car bombs exploded in quick succession and killed at least three people, with 23 others wounded including women and children.

A third car bomb ripped off in Baquba's western district of Al- Razi, killing one civilian and wounding nine others, the same source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

In a separate incident, three members of the Iraqi army were killed and two more wounded when unidentified gunmen attacked them with silenced guns in Safra village, 25 km east of Baquba.

Earlier in the day, a woman was killed and her husband seriously injured when their car detonated a roadside bomb near the village of Sheikhi, 30 km northeast of Baquba, another source said.

Violence is still common in Iraqi cities despite the dramatic decrease since its peak in 2006 and 2007 when the country was engulfed in sectarian killings.
