Ghanaian president assures peace in December polls

08-16-2012 17:34 BJT

ACCRA, Aug. 16 (Xinhua) -- Ghana President John Dramani Mahama promised here late Wednesday to make all his efforts to secure the peace of the nation in the upcoming December polls.

"I hereby use this occasion to urge all political actors to use the unprecedented event of Professor (John Evans Atta) Mills' passing, which so united our nation in grief, to effectively refocus Ghanaian politics and alter its tone forever," Mahama said.

He said it was time for everybody -- male or female, young or old -- to take ownership of this country by limiting the voices of pessimism and negativity that sought to break down the society rather than build it up.

Mahama said he was very much aware that there were places within the country where people lacked access to the productive economy, health and social infrastructure that would help them make the most of their opportunities and create a decent life for themselves and their families.

"Together, we can change this. Together, we will change this," he affirmed.

Ghana will hold its presidential and parliamentary elections on Dec. 7, when the ruling National Democracy Congress will face challenges of the main opposition National Patriotic Party.

Former President Mills, who was sworn in as the third president of the Republic of Ghana in January 2009, died on July 31. Then Vice-President Mahama took office as the head of state a few hours after the announcement of Mills' death.
