Two killed, 23 injured in two road accidents in Ukraine

08-16-2012 18:52 BJT

KIEV, Aug. 16 (Xinhua) -- Two people were killed and 23 others injured in two traffic accidents in Ukraine early Thursday, the Emergencies Ministry said.

Two passenger cars collided head-on on the Tsurupinsk-Skadovsk highway in southern Ukraine at midnight local time, killing at least one person and severely injuring eight others, the ministry said in a report.

In a separate accident, a microbus carrying 18 passengers from the Ukrainian capital of Kiev to Poltava hit a lorry on a rural highway near Pyryatyn city in central Ukraine at 00:05 a.m. local time (2205GMT Wednesday).

According to the report, one passenger of the microbus died on the scene, while 15 others, suffering from injures of different degrees, were taken to the hospital.

Local authorities have launched an investigation into the accidents.

Ukraine sees more traffic accidents in hot summers when drivers prefer to travel at cool nights. Poor lighting and bad road conditions are two major causes of the accidents, especially in country areas.

More than 2,600 people have died in road accidents in Ukraine so far in 2012.
