RIO DE JANEIRO, Aug. 19 (Xinhua) -- Violent clashes between rival Brazilian soccer fans on Sunday left one dead another seven injured in Rio de Janeiro.

Tomas Coelho was shot dead during a fight involving more than 50 supporters from rival clubs Vasco da Gama and Flamengo.

The violence broke out when a bus of Flamengo fans en route to the Engenhao stadium for Sunday's local derby against Vasco da Gama stopped at a gasoline station in Rio's north.

The supporters stepped off the bus to confront Vasco supporters who had gathered at an adjacent bar.

A wild brawl ensued with fans exchanging gunfire before the police arrived at the scene, O Globo reported.

Police said another man was in a stable condition after also suffering a bullet wound.

In a separate incident on Sunday, also in Rio's north, six supporters were injured during a shootout between fans of the same clubs.
