Syrian gov't says only Syrians can decide who leads the country

08-20-2012 23:52 BJT Special Report:Crisis in Syria |

DAMASCUS, Aug. 20 (Xinhua) -- Syrian Foreign Ministry said Monday that talking about who should lead Syria is not any other country or the UN envoy's business, stressing that only the Syrians are the ones to decide that.

The ministry's statement came after Arab media reports claimed that the newly-appointed envoy to Syria,Algerian Lakhdar Brahimi, had said that the political process in Syria starts after the ouster of President Bashar al-Assad.

However, Brahimi denied the reports and said it is too soon to talk about Assad's departure.

The statement said that talking about a civil war in Syria runs counter to the truth and it is only in the minds of the " conspirators" against Syria.

What is happening in Syria are terrorist crimes committed by armed Takfiri gangs that are supported by "known countries" with money and arms, the statement said.

It said that if the new UN envoy wants his mission to succeed, the mission's framework should be acceptable to Syria, adding that the envoy should work hard to have clear commitments from countries that are supporting the "terrorism" in Syria to refrain from such acts.

It said such commitments constitute the corner stone of the mutual efforts to stop the violence from any party.
