Tibetan medicine: marketable around the world

The traditional Tibetan medical system has been accepted and favored more widely, but still faces difficulties on worldwide popularization, said experts and doctors on the recently concluded 5th Beijing International Seminar on Tibetan Studies.

Born in a Tibetan nomad family of the northwest China’s Gansu Province, Dromgekyap has cured more than 50,000 patients in his life. He also acts as director of Tibetan Medicine Research Institution with China Tibetology Research Center.

According to him, Tibetan medicine not only contains medical treatments, but also reflects cultural background, which plays its role by combing medicine, external treatment and making dietary or daily life improvements.

At present Tibetan medicine is still the first choice of local nomads. In addition it has been accepted by more and more people, including foreign patients.

Now Tibetan hospitals and research institutions have been popularized, from Chinese inland cities such as Beijing, Tianjin and Shanghai to foreign regions including Japan, Southeast Asia, Europe and U.S., and it has been especially favored in Mongolia and central Asia countries. Students from Brazil and Chile also have been sent to China to learn Tibetan medicine.

However, Tibetan medicine still has a long way to go.

As a traditional ethno medicine, Tibetan medicine faces several dilemmas, since it is difficult to be described in western scientific and pharmaceutical theories, and international standards are not applicable in Tibetan medicine’s case.

“The international standards are made for Western medicine,” said Dromgekyap. “In fact, we have our own standards. However, now Tibetan medicine and traditional Chinese medicine have to enter the foreign market as food rather than medicine.”

On main producing areas of Tibetan medicine, with high altitude, sharp temperature difference and abundant biological species, Tibetan medicinal materials have formed its unique advantages, and are difficult to be measured only by international standards.

“With a long history, Tibetan medicine owns its value and meets modern people’s tendency of returning to nature. I wish to promote Tibetan medicine to the whole world, to serve for welfare of human beings,” Said Dromgekyap.

Tibetan medicine is a unique medical system created and inherited by peoples living on Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, and praised as “treasure on the snow land”.
