MOSCOW, Aug. 24 (Xinhua) -- Russia calls for a political dialogue between the Syrian government and the opposition, and supports a peaceful settlement of the prolonged crisis in the Middle East country, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov reaffirmed on Friday.

During a phone conversation with the new UN-Arab Leaguejoint special envoy for Syria Lakhdar Brahimi, Lavrov said that Russia favors an immediate ceasefire in the conflict-torn country and the early start of a political dialogue between Syrian authorities and the opposition.

Lavrov also urged all sides in Syria to follow the "roadmap" based on outgoing special envoy Kofi Annan's peace plan, the Geneva agreements of the Action Group for Syria inked on June 30, as well as relevant UN Security Council resolutions, according to an online statement issued by the Russian Foreign Ministry.

Brahimi agreed with the top Russian diplomat, and expressed his intention to "work with all sides in Syria and all countries" that can exert influence on the situation in Syria and help facilitate an intra-Syrian dialogue, said the statement.

Russia would support the new special envoy's efforts and work closely with him for a peaceful settlement of the crisis, the statement added.
