Bus accident leaves 15 killed, 20 others injured in Ecuador

QUITO, Aug. 24 (Xinhua) -- At least 15 people were killed and another 20 injured Friday when a passenger bus fell off a rural highway and plunged into a deep roadside canyon in southwestern Ecuador, said local sources.

The accident occurred around 6 a.m. local time (11:00 GMT) as the bus traveling between the villages of Chilla and Pasaje, in El Oro, appeared to lose control and veer off the two-lane roadbed, according to Red Cross reports.

Most of the victims were farmers from Chilla and their relatives were called up to the site of the accident to help identify the dead.

Fate of the bus driver is not immediately known.

Cause of the accident is under further investigation.
