Booby-trapped car goes off in restive Damascus suburb: state TV

08-31-2012 02:42 BJT Special Report:Crisis in Syria |

DAMASCUS, Aug. 30 (Xinhua) -- An explosive device affixed under a car went off Thursday evening at the Syrian capital Damascus' suburb of Jaramana, the state TV reported, adding that a number of people were injured.

The state TV told no further details, but the pro-government Addounia TV said the blast rocked the al-Basel street in Jaramana near a sweetshop, adding that the blast occurred when an explosive device affixed under a Peugeot 504 was blown off.

It said the car owner and his daughter have been injured and sustained burns and cuts, while material losses have been caused to nearby places.

Such a car model is usually owned by police or security members across Syria.

Jaramana has been rocked by a series of intense explosions that have killed at least 25 people over the past three days.

An explosion happened in the area Tuesday, when an explosive- laden car tore through a funeral procession for two people who were killed on Monday by separate blasts in the same area.

The funeral blast killed 23 people, according to pro-government media reports, while the government media said 12 people had been killed.

Jaramana, which had stayed mostly peaceful during the 18-month crisis before the recent blasts, is dominated by Christians and Druze, minorities which have so far been standing with the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Bombings in this area are expected to widen the gap between Syrians of different sects and beliefs in a society that has already been engulfed by sectarian violence and killing.
