Humanitarian situation in Syria "intolerable," French FM says

08-31-2012 02:43 BJT Special Report:Crisis in Syria |

UNITED NATIONS, Aug. 30 (Xinhua) -- French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius, whose country holds the rotating presidency of the UN Security Council for August, said here on Thursday that the humanitarian situation in Syria is "intolerable" and "unacceptable. "

Fabius made the statement at a joint press conference with his British counterpart William Hague before a Security Council meeting on Thursday afternoon on the humanitarian situation in Syria, which has been plunged into a political crisis since March 2011.

The minister said that 25,000 people have been killed and 200, 000 others wounded in the 18-month Syrian crisis, and that 300,000 refugees have fled the Middle East country to escape violence.

"This is a situation intolerable and unacceptable," he noted.

The United Nations has put the death toll in the prolonged Syrian conflict at 18,000.

France has been actively pushing for a Western plan to force a regime change in Syria, which is firmly opposed by Russia and China, the two veto-wielding permanent members of the Security Council.

According to media reports, more and more Syrian refugees have entered neighboring countries like Turkey, Jordan and Lebanon, as humanitarian situation continues to deteriorate in their home country.

The number of refugee arrivals at the Za'atri camp in Jordan has doubled in the last week, and "a much larger influx" of refugees is expected in the coming days, a UN spokesman said on Tuesday.
