Ford to expand aggressively into S. Korean market

08-31-2012 15:46 BJT

SEOUL, Aug. 31 (Xinhua) -- Ford Motor planned to make an aggressive expansion push in the South Korean market by launching new luxury models and strengthening the recognition of its brand image, head of the U.S carmaker said Friday.

"South Korea is an important opportunity for Ford (to make inroads into). Ford will offer best-ever products and services in the class for South Korean consumers," chief executive officer ( CEO) Alan Mulally said in a briefing in Seoul.

The Dearborn, Michigan-based automaker planned to widen its lineup in the country by rolling out six new models, including new Taurus, New Mustang, All-New Escape, All-New Fusion and Focus diesel.

"This year will be remembered as the year when Ford unveils new models most aggressively in South Korea. All new models will be equipped with fuel-efficient engines ranging from Ecoboost to hybrid and diesel to meet local consumers' demand for high fuel efficiency," said Chung Jae-hee, president of Ford Korea.

Ford, lagging behind German carmakers, saw its market share in the country tumble to 3.8 percent recently from 8.1 percent in 2008. The carmaker sold 2,791 vehicles here this year.

To enhance the recognition of its brand, Ford planned to triple investment into marketing activities, while spending 51 billion won (around 45 million U.S. dollars) this year in widening its dealership network within 2012.
