Singapore launches initiative to help public housing go green

10-06-2012 23:05 BJT

SINGAPORE, Oct. 6 (Xinhua) -- Singapore's Housing and Development Board (HDB), the statutory body that builds public housing flats for more than 80 percent of the Singaporeans, launched an initiative on Saturday to make the neighborhoods greener, more sustainable and eco-friendly.

Known as Greenprint, the initiative will be first rolled out in 38 blocks in the Yuhua constituency in phases over the next two years as a pilot project.

A Pneumatic Refuse Collection System will be installed for better waste management. Rubbish thrown down the chute will be automatically sucked through underground pipes into centralized collection areas.

It will improve hygiene and cut down manpower by about 70 percent.

Secure bicycle parking facilities will be installed to encourage eco-friendly modes of transportation.

Residents can also expect more greenery on rooftops and the walls of flats to help cool the ambient temperature.

The first HDB Greenprint exhibition was launched on Saturday by Grace Fu, minister in the prime minister's office and adviser to Yuhua grassroots organization. The exhibition will travel to three other places in the Yuhua estate over the next few weeks.

More than 80 percent of the resident population in Singapore live in public housing units built and sold by the Housing and Development Board. The flats built by HDB in recent years is increasingly adapted to the modern lifestyle and going in the direction of being greener.
