Dominican police seize 928 kg of cocaine

10-22-2012 12:55 BJT

SANTO DOMINGO, Oct. 21 (Xinhua) -- Dominican anti-drug police on Sunday seized 928 kg of cocaine in the south of the Caribbean country, the National Drug Enforcement Agency (DNCD) said.

The drug was found in a vehicle intercepted by DNCD agents at a highway checkpoint. Eight suspects were arrested while another five escaped, according to the agency.

It was believed the drug had been smuggled into the country from South America, possibly Colombia, before being transported by truck from the southern town of Bani to the capital Santo Domingo, DNCD chief Rolando Rosado Mateo told a press conference.

The Dominican Republic, sharing the island of Hispaniola with Haiti, is a drug-trafficking transit to Europe and the United States.

During a visit last week, William Brownfield, U.S. assistant secretary of state for international narcotics and law enforcement affairs, pledged to offer more aid to the country's anti-drug war.
