1 killed in Myanmar earthquake

YANGON, Nov. 11 (Xinhua) -- At least one person was killed and more than 100 others injured in Singu, Myanmar's northern Mandalay region, while at least five workers went missing in Sunday morning 's 6.8 magnitude earthquake, official sources said.

The man died as the brick wall of a restaurant collapsed, an information official said.

In Shwebo, Singu and Mandalay, some pagodas, residential houses and school buildings also collapsed, while three houses in Tabaitgine were destroyed.

A bright under construction across a river, which links Shwebo, Kyaukmyaung and Singu, collapsed with five workers falling into the river and missing.

The quake has affected over a dozen areas, of which Shwebo in Sagaing region and Singu in Mandalay region were initially reported to be the worst-hit areas.

Shwebo lies at a distance of 72 kilometers to the epicenter of Tabaitgine in Sagaing region.

Other affected areas include Kaw Lin, Honealin, Mandalay, Pin Oo Lwin, Maw Like, Minmu, Monywa, Moenyin, Pakokku and Meikthila.

Tremor was also felt in Dehong Prefecture of southwest China's Yunnan Province that shares borders with Myanmar and Bangkok of neighboring Thailand, sources said.

With a depth of 20 km, the quake happened at 07:40:37 local time (01:10:37 GMT).

Some five aftershocks have been experienced so far, according to local experts.
