KABUL, Nov. 11 (Xinhua) -- A Taliban leader was killed in an operation in Afghanistan's Helmand province, some 555 km south of Afghan capital Kabul, the NATO-led coalition confirmed on Sunday.

"An Afghan and coalition security force killed Taliban direct- action cell leader Zafran during a security operation in Helmand province Saturday," the coalition or International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said in a statement.

"Zafran was believed responsible for conducting improvised explosive device (IED) and ambush-style attacks against Afghan and coalition forces," it said, adding "Prior to his death he was preparing future IED attacks on combined forces,"

The Taliban insurgent group, which has been waging an insurgency of more than one decade, has yet to confirm the death of their man.

The Afghan forces and some 100,000 NATO-led coalition troops have intensified cleanup operations against Taliban and other militants recently but the insurgents in retaliation responded by carrying out suicide and IED attacks.

Earlier Sunday, an Afghan policeman named Jawid was killed and one was wounded as an IED they were defusing went off in Baghlan-e- Markazi district in Baghlan province, some 160 km north of Kabul, police chief of the district, Mohammad Kamin, told Xinhua.

In addition, a U.S. service member with the coalition was killed in an IED attack in southern Afghanistan on Saturday, the coalition confirmed.
